There are a list of cubes that are official events in a WCA endorsed competition. They are:
- 2x2
- 3x3
- 4x4
- 5x5
- 6x6
- 7x7
- 3x3 OH
- Blindsolving:
- 3x3 Blind
- 4x4 Blind
- 5x5 Blind
- 3x3 Multi Blind
- Pyraminx
- Skewb
- Square-1
- Megaminx
- Clock

The other puzzles that are not on a list are considered "non-WCA puzzles". While
Hardware
Getting a high performance cube is not as expensive as you expect. You can get a 3x3 good enough for competitive use for just 10$. Obviously the more you spend, the more features a cube can get.
A timer is needed for the obvious. All official comps uses the stackmat timers(the one that's used in cup stacking), you can get one from your speedcube store. There are non stackmat timers that have similar function to it. They are usually cheaper, but are not used in official comp.
